Beard care basics!

11/11/2013

The key to an epic beard or stash is good grooming. I wash and condition The Beard regularly. I have found that Head&shoulders is great when I go through an itchy spell, but I avoid using it too often as it dries out the hair and makes it rough. I also use a 3 minute conditioning treatment (Aussie Moist 3 minute miracle) about once a month. Try different things on your own Beard as every Beard has different needs. I am currently researching Beard Oils, Many fellow Beardos have had great success with them. Currently the cost to sample them has limited me, but if anyone has any recommendations please email me so I can narrow down my list of products to sample.

Here is a comb similar to the one I use everyday. This comb is great for basic styling, getting kinks & knots out, removing crumbs after a meal, and scratching itches. Avoid using a comb with small teeth, these will snag knots and rip out hairs.

Beard Quotes

11/10/2013

I'm going to post a Beard quote about once a week. I'll start off with a few good ones. If anyone has one they like please email me and I'll post it.

“You cannot grow a beard in a moment of passion.”
-- G. K. Chesterton

“Kissing a man with a beard is a lot like going to a picnic. You don't mind going through a little bush to get there!”
-- Minnie Pearl

“He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man”
 --William Shakespeare

Tomorrow I'll be discussing some of the products I use to keep The Beard happy and healthy.

Origin of the Beard

A decade ago the Beard that I have now honed to a magnificent piece of art, started its humble beginnings as a goatee.  Tired of the status quo of shaving and fitting into the "accepted" appearance of young men, I grew my mustache and goatee out and shortly grew to love the look.  Maintaining the goatee for roughly 8 years the impact on passerby was already noticeable.

After my fathers passing, 3 years ago, I came across a photograph of him with his own epic Beard.  This was my motivation for laying down the razor and never again going nude.  Now 3 years later and a couple of trim backs (for help in thickening the sides to match the chin) the Beard is reaching 9 inches in length.

I have heard people say that men shouldn't groom their Beards, I disagree.  I have found that taking care of the Beard rewards me with better growth, softer hair, and more positive reinforcement from starngers on the street.  It is not uncommon for people to stop me and comment on its beauty, ask to touch it, and share their envy that they cannot grow one like it.  My wife helps to trim the Beard and gives me treatments for better follicle care.  I take pride in it and am happy to see that others are embracing their natural look.

Great men have beards, great beards make men.
